“No, you go,” said Sage as she threw the cube to me.
My mouth opened to form an objection, but Sage cut me off.
“I can regenerate, remember?”
I smiled as I looked over at my former enemy, “Thank you.”
I pushed the button and felt myself being transported to a different location.
As soon as Shaela was gone, I summoned X.I.N. to me. I had a few loose ends to tie up before this world became engulfed in nuclear flames. With X.I.N. with me, I was able to complete my first task in just a few seconds, which just left the hardest one to deal with.
“Make the call X.I.N.” I said as I sat down on a stool, preparing myself for the end.
“Sage! Is everything alright, the timer is still going?”
It was good to hear Alfran’s voice, just one more time.
“I won’t be coming back I’m afraid.”
“WHAT!?!” he gasped, “Don’t say that!”
“There was only one transportation cube left,” I replied, “I… I gave it to Shaela.”
I was met with silence, heart-breaking silence, I was going to lose two friends in a single day, the only two friends I’d ever made.
“She’s so much stronger than me,” I started, “The universe is going to need strength like hers if it’s going to pull through whatever this thing is.”
“Screw the universe! I need you Sage!”
Damn him, why does he have to make this harder!?!
“Wait!” Alfran cried out, “Your Lazarus augment! You’ll come back!”
“Not this time, it got damaged when I was inside the mainframe. I’m afraid that this will be my final death. I’ve cherished our talks, our friendship, and in another life… maybe something more.”
I disconnected the call and looked up at the timer, tears filling my one organic eye. No sense in cowering down here waiting for the end to happen, I would face my end with courage. I synced the countdown to my cybernetic eye, climbed the stairs and walked out of the home into the open streets.
This was finally it.
But I’m okay with it.
Why is it?
That I feel.
The most alive.
