“Can you maintain a sprint for very long?” the San’Dreki asked as soon as Leyva and Samla disappeared.
“I can keep up; don’t you worry about me,” I replied, wondering why she wasn’t willing to use more of her cubes.
“Good, it’s not far from here, let’s go!”
Without waiting to see if I was following, she was off. I kept pace easily, but she was moving a lot faster than I thought she would be, clearly, she had some form of augment to boost her speed and endurance.
“Where are we going?” I asked as I pulled up beside her.
“The place that started the countdown.”
Why there? “Wait, you think we can stop this thing?”
She looked at me and shook her head, “Not all of it, this planet will be a wasteland for centuries, there is no stopping that, but if we can reach the console, and if I can hack the mainframe, perhaps I can grab a handful of abort codes and minimise the damage on the surface.”
“But it’s the bombs that have been set to launch into the planet’s core that we must stop, X.I.N. counted over a hundred of these nukes and if even one of them launches, this planet will explode in a rather impressive fashion.”
“Well, then, let’s pick up the pace!” I replied as I sped past her. I couldn’t help but smile when she caught up, giving me a wicked grin as she rushed past me as if I was walking.
Wait a minute, I’ve seen that grin before.
