The Line

Greetings Nexus users, it is I, X.I.N. your friendly A.I. tasked with providing you with information pertaining to but not limited to: important facts, locales, xenology of the various races within the galaxy, and historical events on planet Xaabos. I have been authorized by End User, to share files allocated to their personal storage servers. All timestamps have been removed at the request of End User.

Three days from now, and I will be sixteen. Three days from now, and I will also be dead. Such is the lot appointed to a San’Dreki that refuses to augment their body; the implant that prepares my body for cybernetic upgrades is also responsible for killing me.

I never wanted this. I was never given a choice. I was implanted while I was still an infant, a dying tradition amongst the older houses, a dotish tradition that my father insisted on keeping.

It saddens me that it must come to this, but I am at peace with my decision. I will never allow my body to be mutilated in favour of perceived advantages that my father raves about. Well father, three days from now, and your legacy will end.

Implanting at infancy is still a common practise amongst most San’Dreki civilians, however switching the implant on is usually done with the child’s consent when they are old enough to understand. Very few families nowadays take that decision away from the child. It is possible that this entry is centuries old, or we are dealing with a very old fashioned family.

Two days from now, and I will be sixteen. Two days from now, and I will also be dead. I went to visit the Tech Gardens this morning; I may not be in favour of modding myself, but there is still beauty in technology. I loved the way that the trees and grass changed colour as the wind brushed past, or when a foot touched its surface.

While I was there, I met a boy… A man really, as he was a few years older than myself and had already gone through his first augmentation, a captivating cybernetic eye that seemed capable of piercing my very soul. His name was Torbyn and he was so… breathtaking, I was instantly enamoured with him, and we talked all throughout the day. When the suns started to set, he took his leave and disappeared.

It is a shame that I should meet him now, two days from my death; but at least I get to see him one last time before my implant kills me, before he left he invited me to a masquerade ball at his family’s estate. I’ve never been to a ball before; every girl should go to a ball before they die.

Balls are an ancient tradition amongst San’Dreki families, used for the purpose of securing arranged marriages or important business deals. It is considered rare for modern day San’Dreki to host balls but it is not unheard of, perhaps this is a family that is honouring its past?

Tonight is my sixteenth birthday. Tonight and I will also get my first augmentation. Why the sudden change of heart? Well, I fell in love. This love is so pure that it must continue; I must change in order to be with my beloved Torbyn.

Last night was amazing, from the moment I arrived Torbyn had me in his arms. We danced the night away, our tails moving to the music in perfect unison, caught in each others hypnotic powers, silent save for the moments when he declared my eternal beauty. As the shadows deepened and the party started to wind down, he grabbed my hand and pulled me away from the ballroom, a dazzling smile on his beautiful face.

We found ourselves in a garden, and it was here that I gave myself to him. As I lay in his arms, he told me that he loved me, and that he wished that we could spend more time together. I broke out of his grasp and tears filled my eyes, I fled from my love straight into my father’s arms.

“I will do it, but I get to choose the upgrade.” I said to him, and he just smiled and told me to get some rest.

I now can’t wait to get my cybernetic eye. Once I recover from the surgery I will surprise Torbyn, and then our love may continue.

San’Dreki dancers are renowned for using their tails to hypnotize their patrons as a way of dominating them, but when they are used in combine with another San’Dreki, it is one of the most intimate moments a San’Dreki pairing could achieve.

I opened my cybernetic eye for the first time this morning, and I was greeted with excruciating agony. White hot pain lanced through my brain as a rush of information coalesced into one incoherent thought, the wave of nausea, the vomiting that followed and the eventual black out made for a fairly poor first impression.

I’m still not used to it, but the pain has receded, and I can at least perform some simple tasks with my cybernetic eye. I chose one with a hacking interface, and when I can manage a hack without giving myself a migraine, I will tap into Torbyn’s video and audio feed so I can see and hear my love while I lay here and recover.

– End of Video Log: Entry Four –

When a Cybernetic eye is switched on for the first time, because it is mapped to the persons brain itself, everything that the person thinks is run through the eye’s X.I.N. app, the initial influx of data is like a barrage of Nexus searches about pain, which funnily enough, causes more pain. Most San’Dreki pass-out from the experience and those that don’t are bedridden with throbbing migraines for weeks.

I have been betrayed. My heart is broken and this is why:

“You have done well Torbyn. Tell your father that all his debts are cleared.”

“Thank you my lord, seducing your daughter was easy. I hope that we can continue to do business in the future?”

“Perhaps… Wait, I think someone is listening in!”

– End of Audio Log –

They have crossed the line. They have crossed the line. They have crossed the line. It is time for me to cross the line myself.

– End of Video Log: Entry Five –

This appears to be a turning point in End Users life, as demonstrated in the following CCTV footage.

Playing CCTV Footage: Incident One –

“Jejune? What are you doing here?”

“Oh nothing father… I just wanted to show you my new upgrade.”

“Sky-shard tipped tail? Why go to all that expense if you never intend on us… ooof!”

“Oh I intend to use it. Father!”

End of CCTV Footage: Incident One –

And also this footage here.

Playing CCTV Footage: Incident Two –

“Jejune my darling! How wonderful it is to see-”

“Save it!”

– Jejune plays back audio of Torbyn’s conversation with her father. –

“I… Ah… It’s not what you thi-”

Jejune flicks her tail and delivers a shallow cut to Torbyn’s  chest. The affects of which is no doubt an exceptionally strong and fast-acting poison begins to take it’s toll on the man.  –

“Good bye, my beloved.”

End of CCTV Footage: Incident Two –

I apologize if any of those scenes were too graphic to stomach. There is one last entry in End User’s logs.

My name is Jejune Takkurys, and I am an Initiate in Project: Impavid. By the end of my training I will be the galaxies greatest assassin. I learnt two things from this whole ordeal… Never trust anybody, and I love crossing the line.

    1. Thank you! I’m glad you liked the style of the story, I wanted to try something different and really liked how this came out.

The sets are what took me so long to post the story! The story itself was finished during the first week of the month, but I wanted to get the feel right by tailoring the sets to how I wanted. Super happy that you liked them!

  2. Holy crap! This was rather disturbing but awesome. I knew something would go horribly wrong. Talk about hell having no fury.

Loved the pictures too. You did such an amazing job staging everything. I can tell you put in a lot of hard work.

  3. Dang! Love and betrayal.. They make great conflict stories. I love the ending. You go Jejune! I love how you created this world, Munter! This is what I strive to do one day. Completely create a new world and race. You do it so flawlessly.

    1. Thank you! I’m glad you liked it! This is just a teaser into the world of Ironbound, as this is kind of an Origin story for one of my characters 🙂 if you ever want help with this type of thing, hit me up via PM and I can show you some of the steps I go to to create a race/world.

      1. I would ultimately love that! For you know my stories are usually on the realistic side (characters and world). I’ve always wondered how I could really do some kind of fantasy or fictional worlds and stuff. I want to expand my genres of writing. I will definitely PM you! Thank you for your offer!

  4. She’s so beautiful! And was so innocent… Wasn’t it clear that if her father was so rich and famous he wouldn’t just be okay with letting his name and blood line die? Wasn’t it clear he would try to convince her otherwise? Well, not so innocent any more.
I may be completely mistaken, but is this the original Sage and the story why she became an infamous assassin?

    1. You are correct, this is Sage’s origin story! 🙂

She was innocent, she trusted that her father would honour her wishes, never once believing that he would do something so devious. It’s kind of like a self-fulfilling prophecy, by trying to ensure his bloodlines survival, he actually made what he feared the most come to pass.
